What is VenTESOL?

Venezuela Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages is a non-profit organization aimed at English teachers in Venezuela. It exists thanks to volunteer work done by its members. Such voluntarism is not easy as most members are full-time teachers, sometimes holding two jobs.

Mision

VenTESOLers are actively involved and committed to their mission, which is no other than to develop expertise in English language teaching and learning as well as to empower the ELT community to give it strength.

Objetives

VenTESOL’s main objectives are to:

  • Promote the ELT issues studies
  • Strengthen the English language teaching and learning at all educational levels in Venezuela
  • Promote and spread research works in the ELT area
  • Work collaboratively with other teacher organizations with the same interests

Regions

In order to not centralize the working area of VenTESOL, the country has been divided into seven different regions in whicheach one has its own coordinator who is encharged of promoting ELT activities.

Meet the team that makes Venezuela TESOL possible

Mary Allegra

President

Mary Allegra is a M.S. in Applied Linguistics and a Graduate Specialist in TEFL from Simon Bolivar University, Associate Professor of English Phonetics and Phonology at the undergraduate and graduate levels of the Modern Languages Department of the Faculty of Education at the University of Carabobo (UC). She is also the Chair of English Phonetics and Phonology at the UC since 2007. Mary co-authored the book “Pronunciation Book One”, American English Course Series. Besides, she has published different research articles and is writing a book on pronunciation games and co-founding two digital research journals. She is currently VenTESOL President.

Monica Fernandez

1st Vice President

Monica Fernandez holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a Major in Modern Languages from the University of Carabobo. She has been a professor at the UC since 1998 and the Coordinator of the Labs of the Modern Language Department of the Faculty of Education at the University of Carabobo.She holds a Master in Reading and Writing and a Specialization in Educational Management. She is also the co-author of the Activity Book 2 for the series American English Course.

Johannes Rojas

2nd Vice President

Johannes Rojas has a B.A. in Education major in English from the University of Carabobo. Johannes is completing his graduate studies in TEFL and conducting research on best practices for EFL teachers among Puerto Cabello regional schools also for UC. He has held several positions as a Phonetics and Phonology intern, ELT instructor at language academies and at UNIPAP, heading the Modern Languages School. Influenced by the volunteering spirit at FACE-UC early on during his teacher training years, he has served VenTESOL in state, regional, and national capacity. He is currently the 2nd Vice-president.

Miguel Perez

3rd Vice President

Miguel Perez holds a B.A. in Education major in English from the University of Carabobo. Miguel is on his way to earn a Master’s Degree in Open and Distance Education from UNA. An experienced K-12 and adult teacher, he founded and heads MFL Academy in San Felipe, Yaracuy State. His main areas of interest are ICT and Learning Technologies in ELT. He has been an active VenTESOLer since 2010, serving as Yaracuy State Representative. In his duties as VenTESOL Communications Coordinator, Miguel followed his predecessor’s steps and consolidated our web presence and social media platforms. He is currently the 3rd Vicepresident.

Reina Ruiz

Secretary

Reina Ruiz holds and undergraduate degree as English Teacher from PEL-IPMALA. and a Graduate Degree as a Master in Higher Education. Ten years of experience in English Language Teaching. Research fields: English for Specific Purposes, Digital Literacy, Spoken Grammar and Differentiated Instruction. Content areas: Linguistics, Grammar, English for Specific Purposes and Language Acquisition.

Pedro Escalante

Treasurer

Pedro Escalante has a B.A. in Education major in English from the University of Carabobo. Pedro has also finished Simon Bolivar University’s Professional Development Program in Natural Languages and their Applications. He has gained marketing and financial skills from different job training programs prior to his ELT. He has held TEFL internships and professorships at UC as as elementary and high schools in Valencia, Carabobo State. He has worked as a coordinator at various VenTESOL English Immersion Camps and collaborated with several VenTESOL events.

Jesus Sosa

Editor

Jesús Sosa holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Modern Languages with a Major in Translation, and a Master’s Degree in Teaching/Learning Foreign Languages, both from ULA. He is a professor at ULA´s Modern Languages School, where he also works as Coordinator of the Unidad de Extension y Produccion. He is a research member at CILE, member at GRIEIM, and moderator at DTICEALE. His content areas include: ICT for EFL, content creation, reading, and writing.

Miguel Frontado

Communications Coordinator

ULA, B.A. in Modern Languages (International Organizations/Linguistic and Literary Research). He is currently the Children and Youth Courses Coordinator and ACCESS Microscholarship Program-Merida Coordinator at CEVAM, and VenTESOL Communications Coordinator. He has also conducted researches for the application of technology in the EFL classroom, EFL didactics for children, and task-based learning for young students.

Julio Palma

Communications Coordinator

Julio Palma holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a Major in Modern Languages from the University of Zulia where he also completed a Master’s Degree in Linguistics and Language Teaching. He accomplished three online courses on integrating tools into the classroom sponsored by the US Embassy E-Teacher program.

Evelin Suij-Ojeda

Past President

Is a freelance teacher educator and English teacher. Doctor of Education student. Master’s degree of ARTS in TESOL from St Mark and St John University UK and Master`s degree of Reading and Writing from UC, Venezuela. She is currently the Managing Director at MundiLanguages and she is part of the Faculty at Westcliff University at the MA in TESOL. Evelin has more than 14 years of experience in ELT. VenTESOL president 2013-2015.
